Trades, supporters pledge to march on Labour Day

TORONTOOntario’s workers and their supporters are celebrating Labour Day across the province with messages of solidarity and pledges to march on Labour Day Monday.

A headline event on Monday will be Toronto and York Region Labour Council annual parade, starting at 9:30 a.m. from Queen and University in downtown Toronto, heading towards the Exhibition Grounds. The theme this year is “Workers Shape our Future.”

The Toronto and York council has also posted a video on YouTube highlighting the benefits of union participation: . Blair Gallant, president, Sheetmetal Workers and Roofers Local 30 in Toronto, commented on the video: “Labour Day is a time to show the world we are a force to be reckoned with for everyone’s rights.”

David Piccini, the provincial Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, issued a statement highlighting Ford government policies that support labour. Piccini stated: “On Labour Day, we honour the workers who are the backbone of Ontario’s success. Our government is committed to supporting workers through enhanced protections, including high fines for exploitative practices and new training programs to strengthen our workforce.”

The Ontario 鶹ýion Secretariat called Labour Day a time for reflection and celebration.
