Bill 288 passes giving Ontarians a skilled trades boost
Monte McNaughton, Ontario’s minister of labour, training and skills development, issued a statement following the passage of Bill 288, the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021, Wednesday, stating the apprenticeship system will be modernized in the province, helping “workers gain in-demand skills to lift them up and energize our economy for years to come.” As part of the act a new Crown agency called Skilled Trades Ontario will be created, replacing the Ontario College of Trades.
“The new agency will provide a seamless one-window experience for all services, including registration, issuance and renewal of certificates, and equivalency assessments, and will offer many services online,” the statement reads.
Toronto Hydro receives award for COVID-19 response
Toronto Hydro has receivedthefrom the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) Americas, a global organization of business continuity and resilience professionals representing more than 100 countries worldwide. Toronto Hydro received the award because of its response to COVID-19, including efforts to mobilize immediately to protect its workforce and the public, while continuing to provide safe and reliable delivery of power throughout Toronto. Being the “Americas” Award winner, Toronto Hydro is automatically entered into the pool for the Global 2021 Most Effective Recovery Award, which will be awarded later this year, states a release.
Ontario to make training announcement
Today at 9:30 a.m. Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton and parliamentary assistant Jane McKenna will be making an announcement about an investment in students and training. The Daily Commercial News will be following the story.
Overnight closures planned for Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge
As of Sunday, June 6 the is closing the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge to all traffic, including pedestrians, every Sunday to Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. These closures, which are expected to last until Oct. 16, are due to construction on the United States span of the bridge. As a result of the closures, the Canada Border Services Agency is recommending commercial drivers and travellers entering or exiting Canada use either the Thousand Islands Bridge or the Seaway International Bridge.
