Pittsburgh International Airport renews modernization effort

Pittsburgh International Airport renews modernization effort

PITTSBURGH – Airlines serving Pittsburgh International Airport have approved a restart of the facility’s terminal revitalization.

On March 17 the airlines agreed to fund $182 million of construction site prep work for the Terminal Modernization Program (TMP). The billion-dollar initiative aims to build a new 700,000 square foot terminal consolidating ticketing, security checkpoints, baggage claim and a multi-modal complex including a 3,300-space parking garage and entrance roadways.

The approval allows the Allegheny County Airport Authority to bid and award contracts for structural steel and concrete decks, foundations and underground utilities later in the spring and provides funds for additional design of Airside Terminal renovations.

“This ballot approval is the result of many months of collaborative discussions with our airline partners, who have been supportive through every stage of design and decision-making on the TMP. This officially clears the way for construction to begin on the first airport terminal in the U.S. to open post-pandemic, designed and constructed with the highest public health standards in mind,” Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said in a statement.

The airport authority recently issued notices to proceed on more than $19 million in contracts to local firms Independence Excavating, W.G. Tomko and Westmoreland Electric for early site work that was originally scheduled to begin last April between concourses C and D but were delayed by the pandemic. Officials have also reevaluated design and operational plans to address concerns raised by COVID-19.

Concept design for the airport was done in part by Luis Vidal + Architects.

You can hear an interview with Vidal on the 鶹ýion Record Podcast where he discusses the importance of designing with COVID in mind.
