On this episode of the 鶹ýion Record Podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with Eric Anderton, an executive coach, podcast host and author of the 鶹ýion Genius blog about moving from building with your hands to managing a construction team.
The three pillars of running a construction business, Anderton said, are leadership, strategy, and sales and marketing, which are not specialties most people come into the business with. Getting the right people in the right positions to build safely and profitably is key, he added.
Anderton also stressed managers “never settle” and always stay on the lookout to develop and retain talent over the long term. He added the command and control nature of traditional construction businesses stems from adopting models after soldiers returned from WW2 and started companies using the lessons they’d learned during those formative experiences. This mindset is now finally shifting, he said.
