On this episode of the Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇåion Record Podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with Scott Jenkins, the president and CEO of ZS2, a Calgary-based startup that manufactures sustainable building products using magnesium-based cement.
Jenkins explained while magnesium is one of the oldest materials used in construction, Portland cement based on limestone is the current dominant material in use for residential, commercial and industrial applications. ZS2 uses magnesium drawn from oil and gas waste and other sources to create cement that creates much less CO2 during production with magnesium binding to carbon instead of releasing it.
Jenkins also explained the various products the company produces including TechBrick, TechBoard and TechPanels and delved into how Calgary’s traditional role as an oil and as hub dovetails with a growing technology sector.
