City worker killed in Vancouver workplace incident

VANCOUVER—The City of Vancouver flew its flags at half-mast this week to honour a city worker who died from injuries sustained in a workplace incident.

“The loss of City of Vancouver truck driver Gord Dolyniuk on the job is devastating for his co-workers in our Engineering Streets team, city crews, friends and family,” wrote Sarah Kirby-Yung, city councillor, in a tweet. “My heart goes out to all impacted by this tragedy. The flag at city hall will be flying at half-mast in recognition.”

The city stated it was deeply saddened to share the loss of a member of its Engineering Streets team in the Friday (Jan. 7) incident.

“Our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues,” said officials in a statement. “We appreciate Gord’s 32 years of service to the residents of Vancouver.”

WorkSafeBC and city investigations are underway. Counselling services are being offered to staff. The city has yet to reveal details about the incident.
