VANCOUVER — The Canadian Wood Council’s Wood WORKS! BC program revealed the winners of the 16th Wood Design Awards in British Columbia virtually on July 14.
Architects, structural engineers, project teams, members of local government, industry sponsors and guests attended the event which recognized leadership and innovation in structural and architectural wood use in the province.
Over 50 projects were nominated in nine categories for the 2020 awards from across the province as well as international submissions from the United States and China.
“With wood now recognized for its ability to significantly reduce greenhouse gas impacts in our built environment and increase construction efficiency, it now plays a leading role in the current design and building revolution. The continued exploration of new frontiers with wood is the foundation of our awards program and the projects presented here this evening provide a view into the future,” Wood WORKS! BC executive director Lynn Embury-Williams said in a statement.
Perkins&Will won in the Residential Wood Design category for the Solo project in the Soo Valley, B.C., and the Multi-Unit Wood Design award went to Studio 531 Architects for their work on the Cubes Valley in Courtenay, B.C.
Proscenium Architecture and Interiors won in the Commercial Wood Design category for the MEC Vancouver Retail Store project and dk Architecture’s work on the Skeetchestn Health Centre in Savona won in the Institutional Wood Design: Small category while the Institutional Wood Design: Large award went to Lubor Trubka Associates Architects for the Tsleil-Waututh Administration and Health Centre in North Vancouver.
The Western Red Cedar award went to HDR Architecture Associates for the Lakehouse in Summerland and Michael Green Architecture’s work on the Catalyst Building in Spokane, Wash. won them an International Wood Design award.
Jury’s Choice awards were also given to Waymark Architecture for the Charter Telecom Headquarters located in Victoria and to Francl Architecture Inc. for the West Village District Energy Centre located in Surrey.
