Pink Hard Hatz 麻豆传媒高清ion looks to break barriers
PINK HARD HATZ CONSTRUCTION FACEBOOK 鈥 Sashe Ivy is the founder of Pink Hard Hatz 麻豆传媒高清ion, the largest African American, woman-owned and operated construction firm. The firm is based in Chicago.

As an African American woman, 聽got into construction to make a difference in the industry, but it hasn鈥檛 always been easy.

Based in Chicago, Ill.,聽Pink Hard Hatz 麻豆传媒高清ion聽is one of the largest African American聽woman-owned and operated construction firms in the Chicago area.

Ivy has been in the construction and real estate industry for almost 15 years and started her own company four years ago.

鈥淚 was the only female on construction sites and at that time I was a realtor,鈥 Ivy explained. 鈥淚 kept thinking about the idea聽of being a lady GC, and then I met two sisters, one was a plumber and one was an electrician. At that time, 15 years ago, it聽was very unlikely you would meet women in the construction trades, especially a lady GC.聽I didn鈥檛 move on the idea of becoming a lady GC then but I was sitting in a community development meeting and there were all men as I looked around the table聽and God brought the vision back to me of being a lady GC. That鈥檚 how Pink Hard Hatz 麻豆传媒高清ion started.鈥

Her goal is to have crews in all 50 states. She currently employs about 20 men and women who work on different projects.

鈥淲e do everything pertaining to residential and commercial spaces such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry,聽flooring,鈥 Ivy explained. 鈥淲e specialize in kitchens, baths and basements. We also do commercial buildouts.鈥

Recently, the company had a contract with the

鈥淲e just finished a refresh project of four full bathrooms with electrical, plumbing and painting,鈥 Ivy stated. 鈥淭hat was a huge deal for us to land that contract.鈥

Ivy has faced some challenges over the years, she admits. The company was posting some of its work on social media when it suddenly went viral and was featured on various news outlets.

鈥淲hen we ,聽we were attacked for being聽the largest African American聽women-owned and operated construction firm in聽a male-dominated industry,鈥 Ivy recalled. 鈥淲e were getting nasty phone calls. We had over 200 spammers hit our business page with fake reviews. It was a nightmare. Being a woman in construction is harder because they don鈥檛 take you seriously.鈥

People who called said things like, 鈥淵ou guys should be in the kitchen making sandwiches鈥 and 鈥測ou鈥檙e trash.鈥

However, there was positive feedback as well.

鈥淲e got a lot of work from our social media presence,鈥 Ivy said. 鈥淭he feedback was great, but some people don鈥檛 want to see an African American female break barriers in construction.鈥

Ivy said it鈥檚 important for customers to have a contractor they can trust. She is very hands-on and says excellent service and commitment to customer satisfaction is what sets her business apart. 聽

鈥淲e just strive to be the best to give our clients great service at affordable prices,鈥 Ivy explained. 鈥淲hen I鈥檓 out in the field and I鈥檓 seeing the work that鈥檚 being performed, I鈥檓 not going to point fingers but it鈥檚 horrible. The difference that鈥檚 going to set us apart is that we truly care. We鈥檙e not just out for the next dollar. We really see women and seniors taken advantage of and we want to change the trajectory in the industry.鈥

There is currently only about 11 per cent of women in the construction field, she added.

鈥淭he field is open to women鈥nd our goal is to bring more women into the聽construction industry,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e working on a training program with an accreditation.鈥澛

She has some advice for women looking to get into the industry.

鈥淚 would tell ladies, let聽your passion become your purpose. If there is anything you really want to do, don鈥檛 let anyone or anything stop you,鈥 Ivy said.聽鈥淛ust Follow your dreams.鈥
