OTTAWA — Canada’s Building Trades Unions executive director Sean Strickland has issued a tribute to departing federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan.

The Nova Scotia MP and cabinet minister announced July 17 he was leaving cabinet for personal reasons. He said he was staying on as MP until the next election.

“To say I was surprised was an understatement – but what I’m feeling today is very proud of what he’s been able to accomplish for not only Canada’s Building Trades Unions, but for all workers in Canada,” stated Strickland.

He said during O’Regan’s time as minister of labour, he saw through “major wins for workers in Canada, including historic and long-sought-after anti-scab legislation for federally regulated workers, as well as the Sustainable Jobs Act, the implementation of the Union-Led Advisory Table, and the introduction of 10 days of paid sick leave for federally regulated workers.”

O’Regan also presided over Natural Resources, Strickland noted, where he made progress on hydrogen, small modular reactor, large-scale nuclear and renewable policy strategies – initiatives “that are now delivering well-paid, unionized jobs for workers today, and will for years to come.”

“Seamus – thank you for your years of service to this country. I will dearly miss working for workers with you as one of our champions. You’ll always be welcome in our union halls and at our conferences,” said Strickland.
