CLAC sues City of Toronto over LIUNA deal
A lawsuit filed against the City of Toronto by the ChristianÌýLabourÌýAssociation of CanadaÌý(CLAC)Ìýwill be heard in Ontario Superior Court today. The suit stems from TorontoÌýCityÌýCouncil’s June 2019 decision to add one union, theÌý³¢²¹²ú´Ç³Ü°ù±ð°ù²õ’ÌýInternational Union of North AmericaÌý(LIUNA), to a list of unions given the exclusive right to work on some types of municipal construction projects. CLAC argues the LIUNA deal violates the City of Toronto Act and the city’s procurement bylaw and policy.Ìý

New technology slated for Rio Tinto smelter
ElysisÌýtoday announced it has selected the Alma smelter, operated by Rio Tinto in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Que., for the first installation and demonstration of its inert anode technology at a commercial size of 450 kiloamperes.ÌýThe firmÌýis a joint ventureÌýenterpriseÌýled by Alcoa and Rio Tinto that is working to commercialize a new technology toÌýdevelopÌýaluminum that eliminates all direct greenhouse gases from the traditional smelting process and instead produces oxygen.ÌýThe project will be supported by a $20Ìýmillion investment from theÌýGovernment of QuebecÌý
