OTTAWA  – Federal budget 2018 proposes to provide $250 million on a cash basis over two years, starting in 2018–19, to Fisheries and Oceans Canada to renew its network of small craft harbours and work with municipalities where investments and divestitures can enhance local communities.
According to the budget, this investment allows the federal government to support, for example:
- building additional berthing space to help address overcrowding in Charlottetown in Southern Labrador;
- extending the seawall to protect the fisheries industry from the full force of waves at the entrance of the harbour in Sainte-Therese-de Gaspe, Que.;
- rehabilitating the east and west piers of Port Dalhousie in St. Catharines, Ont.; andÂ
- making improvements to enhance the safety of moorage facilities for the fisheries industry and other harbour users in Port Hardy and Powell River in B.C.
