MISSISSAUGA, ONT. — Ontario’s unionized sheet metal workers in the ICI sector have rejected the latest offer from their employer bargaining agency, moving a step closer to a possible strike in the sector.
Meanwhile, plumbers and pipefitters in the ICI voted to accept the proposed deal reached by their union bargainers.
The Ontario Sheet Metal Workers’ and Roofers’ Conference reported May 17 it had tallied the results from ratification votes held at locals across the province and determined the deal was rejected “by a large margin.”
“In doing so the members have sent a clear message to the negotiating committee and the contractors’ association that the tentative agreement was simply insufficient to address the dramatic increases to our members’ cost of living,” the statement indicated.
The next scheduled meetings are for the week of May 22 to 29. Workers were instructed to remain on the job.
“If we cannot reach a new tentative agreement it may be necessary to commence a lawful strike,” the release stated.
Details of the plumbers and pipefitters deal were not immediately available. The rank and file, members of UA, had previously rejected an offer. Voting took place May 17
