Painters and tapers working in Ontario’s ICI sector have called off their strike of employers’ jobsites after agreeing with employers to reach a new contract via binding arbitration.
The vote came June 28 with 75 per cent of the employees voting in favour. A statement from the negotiating committee of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) indicated that as part of the arbitration agreement, wage increases imposed by the arbitrator will be retroactive to July 3, 2022.
As a result of the vote, the strike officially ended at midnight June 28, with the union advising workers to return to work today (June 29).
Neither negotiators for the employers nor employees immediately offered comment on the development.
The painters and tapers had voted down the latest offer June 15, with the workers hitting the pavement June 20. It was the second proposed deal that the tapers and painters rejected. The wage offer on the table for the tapers was $8 over three years while the painters turned down $5 for three years.
Three-year contracts in the ICI sector expired April 30.
The carpenters, demolition workers and operating engineers previously called off strikes after ratifying new contracts.
Meanwhile, striking glaziers in the ICI, also members of IUPAT, were voting on a new proposed deal today (June 29).
The glaziers began their strike June 13.
