Stratford’s Patterson Theatre earns U.K. design award

Stratford’s Patterson Theatre earns U.K. design award
HARIRI PONTARINI ARCHITECTS/SCOTT NORSWORTHY—The Tom Patterson Theatre in Stratford, Ont. designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, will be officially inaugurated in June.

TORONTO—Hariri Pontarini Architects has announced the Tom Patterson Theatre in Stratford, Ont., designed by the firm, has won a Civic Trust Award in the United Kingdom.

It is the only project from Canada to be recognized in the international awards program.

Hariri Pontarini’s lead on the project was Siamak Hariri, the firm’s co-founder. The building features a facade of curvilinear glass and bronze designed to reflect the nearby Avon River.

The theatre’s inauguration has been delayed two years due to the pandemic but is now scheduled for June 4.

Commenting on the theatre, the jury said, “The moment of entry seems like a tactile embrace, which is a triumph of design and testament to the skill of the designers and contractor’s team. An excellent scheme. Intimacy, but with grandeur.”

“We are delighted that the Tom Patterson Theatre has received this honour,” stated Stratford Festival artistic director Antoni Cimolino in a statement. “Our dream for this project was to create a shining example of legacy architecture that enhanced the local community and offered opportunities for greater community engagement.

“Siamak Hariri deeply understood our goals and, as a result, we are now proudly seeing our dream come true.”
