TORONTO — The Ontario government has officially awarded the construction contract for the East Harbour Transit Hub.

The project is being delivered through a joint venture of AtkinsRéalis and Bird 鶹ýion, leading alongside Hatch Ltd., states a release.

The execution phase of the project includes completion of the rail corridor and bridge widening over an important thoroughfare, which will continue to be undertaken in planned phases to keep GO Transit services running with minimal impact, explains a release from Bird. The work will also include the start of station works and associated infrastructure as well as a future road extension to facilitate a future streetcar connection.

The new transit hub aims to provide faster transit for those across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and will connect to both GO Transit and the Ontario Line. It is a joint initiative of the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto.

The East Harbour Transit Hub is located immediately east of the Don Valley Parkway and south of Eastern Avenue. It will serve the Riverdale, Riverside and Leslieville communities.

Once complete, the hub is expected to serve approximately 100,000 daily riders, split between the Ontario Line and GO Transit.

“We need to build more homes near transit,” said Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Canada’s Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, in a statement. “And with this investment, the community surrounding East Harbour Transit Hub will see the addition of approximately 4,000 residential units.”
