Enbridge and TCHC partnership makes new buildings more energy efficient

TORONTO—Enbridge Gas Inc. and Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) recently marked a 10-year partnership that has decreased energy costs and reduced greenhouse gas emissions for residents.

Enbridge Gas provides annual incentive rebates to TCHC through its Affordable Housing Multi-Residential Program which enables it to invest in energy efficiency upgrades resulting in reduced emissions and savings in the cost of natural gas.

In 2020/21 Enbridge provided rebates totalling over $1 million, states a release, adding the rebates supported 26 projects involving a combination of measures, including high-efficiency boilers, ventilation upgrades, building controls, and modern heating and cooling systems at various locations throughout Toronto.

The energy efficiency modifications achieved an annual operating cost avoidance of more than $400,000 for TCHC and natural gas savings of 1,363,785 m3, which translates into an annual reduction of 2,557 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide. This is equivalent to taking 556 passenger cars off the road for one year.

“Cumulatively, over the lifespan of the equipment upgrades, the program expects to save more than 26 million m3 of natural gas and $7.8 million in avoided gas costs that can be redirected to other initiatives that improve quality-of-life for housing residents, including the provision of equitable, barrier-free access to TCHC’s building facilities, shared spaces, service areas and exterior amenities,” states the release.
